Ayatollah Bahjat passes away‏

Iranian Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Hajj Sheikh Mohammad-Taqi Bahjatwho passed away inDar-es-Salaam on May 17. Ayatollah age was 96 and he was admitted at the Vali-e-Asr Hospital in the city of Qom. Born in the northern Iranian city of Fouman in Guilan Province, Ayatollah Bahjat was among one of the most revered Iranian clerics whose religious decrees were followed by many Shia Muslims. He was well-known for hispiety and the strict observance of the principles of Fiqh(Islamic jurisprudence). Grand Ayatullah was born into a religious and pious family in the year 1334AH (1915CE) in Fuman in North Iran. He lost his mother before he was 2 years old. About his father, Mahmood Behjat, family members relate an interesting event. When his father was around 16-17 years of age, he fell seriously ill and they thought he would not survive. When the relatives gathered around this young man, one of the family members heard a voice saying, “Do not worry, he will be fine, because he is going to be the father of Muhammad Taqi.” After this event, the youth soon recovered from his illness, got married a few years later and had several sons. He named his third son Muhammad Taqi in memory of the event of his childhood. However, in infancy, this child fell into a pond and was drowned. He had one more son after him, and he also named him Muhammad Taqi. This last son grew up to be the great scholar and ‘arif, Ayatullah Behjat. His father was a reciter of marsiyas and he would often take the young Agha Behjat with him to his recitals, thus inculcating in him a deep and abiding love for Sayyid al-Shuhada (A.S.). From a young age he showed signs of genius and a great thirst for acquiring knowledge. After his primary studies, he went straight into religious studies, and at the age of 14, he moved to Kerbala. Four years later he came to the famous seminary of Najaf, where he had an opportunity to study under some of the best teachers and scholars in the Muslim world. He studied Usul under Grand Ayatullahs Abu’l Hasan Isfahani, Mirza Na’ini and Shaykh Muhammad Hasan Gharawi Isfahani (known as Kumpani), and Fiqh under Ayatullah Mirza Muhammad Taqi Shirazi. He studied the philosophical texts of Ibn Sina and Mulla Sadra under Ayt. S. Hasan Badkubeyi. At the same time as attending the intermediate and higher levels of religious studies, he was very meticulous in his pursuit of spiritual and mystical instruction. In this regard, his teachers were Ayatullah Muhammad Hasan Isfahani and Ayatullah Sayyid Abdu’l Ghaffar, and finally, the Godly scholar, the matchless instructor, the giant amongst spiritual masters, Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Qadhi Tabataba’i. He remained with his last teacher for many years, learning from him the secrets of the higher paths of Akhlaq and ‘Irfan. 15 years later, he returned to Iran and settled in Qum. Here, in the company of Ayatullah Khomeini, Ayatullah Gulpaygani and other great future figures, he continued his studies under Grand Ayatullah Burujerdi.

Hazrat Fatima (p.b.u.h) in the Holy Quran Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth; a likeness of His light is as a niche in which is a lamp, the lamp is in a glass .... [ 25 : 35 ] Ibn al Maghazli al Shafi'i has related that the niche means Hazrat Fatima (p.b.u.h.), the lamp means Hassan (p.b.u.h.) and Hossain (p.b.u.h.) ..... Give the kinsman his due.... [ 17 : 26 ] Commentators have written that when this verse was revealed the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) asked the Angel Gabrael : Who are the kinsmen and what is their due ? The Angel replied: Give Fadak to Fatima for it is her due, and whatever is due to Allah and the Prophet out of Fadak, that also belongs to her, so entrust it to her also. Thereupon the Holy Prophet called Fatima (p.b.u.h.) and wrote the deed of gift, giving Fadak to her. Tafseer Durre Mansoor ( Volume 4 page 177 ) It is Allah's wish to keep away all blemish from you, O Ahlulbait, and purify you with a perfect purification. [ 33 : 33 ] Al Tirmizi, Ibn Manthoor, Al Hakim, Ibn Mardawaih and Al Bayhaqi in his Sunan, all recorded the report of Umme Salemah, wife of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) in which she said : In my own house the Quranic verse : Certainly God wants to keep away all abominations from you .... Ali Fatima, Al Hassan and Al Hussein were at my house. The messenger of God covered them with a garment and then said: These are the members of my House. God keep away abomination from them and make them pure and spotless. Sahih al Tirmizi, Volume 5 page 328 Hadith no. 3875 And whoever disputes with thee concerning him after the inspired knowledge which has been given unto thee, tell him : ' Come, let us call our sons and your sons; our women and your women; and ourselves and yourselves; then let us pray and invoke Allah's curse upon those who lie. [ 3 : 61 ] When the above verse came down (at the time of debate between the Messenger and the Christians from Najran), the Messenger of God called upon Ali, Fatima, Hassan and Hussein and said : God, these are the members of my family. Sahih Muslim Volume 15 page 176 HER VIEWS ABOUT THE HOLY QURAN: When Fadak, the property which the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) had gifted to his one and only daughter Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) was snatched away from her, she (p.b.u.h.) felt grieved by this action. Accompanied by some women, Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) came to the Mosque and delivered a lengthy speech. The following is an abstract of what Sayyida Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) spoke about the Holy Quran in her sermon: “A covenant He brought unto you, and an heir He left to guard you; That is the eloquent Book of Allah; The truthful Quran; The brilliant light; The shining beam; Its insight are indisputable; Its secrets are revealed; Its indications are manifest; and its followers are blessed by it. (The Quran) leads its adherents to goodwill; and hearing it leads to salvation; with it are the bright divine authorities achieved, His manifest determination acquired, His prohibited decrees avoided; His manifest evidence recognized; His satisfying proofs made apparent, His permissions granted and His laws written…” (‘Ilal al-Sharai’) HER RECITATION OF THE HOLY QURAN: It is reported from Imam Muhammad Ibn ‘Ali al-Baqer (p.b.u.h.) that one day, the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) sent Salman al-Farsi (r.a.) to the house of his one and only beloved daughter Sayyida Fatimah (p.b.u.h.). Salman narrates: “I arrived at her door step and offered my salutations. I heard that Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) was in her room reciting the Holy Quran and I witnessed that the handle of the mill worked on its own (without anyone) crushing the grain into flour…. when I informed the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) about it, he (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) smiled and said, “O Salman! Allah (SWT) has filled the heart and every part and organ of my daughter with faith. Whenever she is engrossed in the obedience of Allah (SWT), He (SWT) sends angels to help her (in her affairs)”. (Manaqib Aali Abi Talib) HER LAST WILL ABOUT THE HOLY QURAN: Reporting from his father and ancestors, Imam Ja'far Ibn Muhammad al-Sadeq (p.b.u.h.) has said, “When Sayyida Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) was on her deathbed, she (p.b.u.h.) said to Imam ‘Ali (p.b.u.h.) in her will: “After my death, you wash my body; put the shroud upon me and say the funeral prayer. Thereafter, bury me with your own hands; and once you have covered me with soil, sit by my grave on the side of my head facing towards my face and recite the Holy Quran. This is the most crucial time when the dead require the favours of those who are alive…” (Misbaah al-Anwaar) It was in the following of the Sunnah of Sayyida Fatimah al-Zahra (p.b.u.h.) that ‘Allama Hilly (QS) had mentioned in his will to his son Fakhrul-Muhaqqiqeen that: “Do your level best to visit my grave (often) and recite few verses from the Holy Quran upon it”. (Quran-o-‘Itrat) ENTERING PARADISE WHILST RECITING THE QURAN: Salman al-Farsi (r.a.) once asked the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) to describe the position and status of his beloved daughter Sayyida Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) on the day of Judgement. The Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.&h.f.) smiled and expressed his joy over this and said, “By Him in whose hand is my life! Indeed Fatimah will arrive on the day of Judgement riding on camel. On her right will be Gabrael and on her left will be Mikaeel. ‘Ali (her spouse) will be in front of her and Hasanayn (her two sons) shall be walking behind her. Allah, the Exalted will be her protector. Then a voice will be heard: ‘O people of Mahshar! Lower your gazes and bow your heads down for Fatimah – the daughter of your Prophet, the wife of your Imam, and the mother of Hasanayn is coming. They will then pass (the bridge of) Siraat with Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) fully covered by two pieces of white garment and they will enter paradise. When her eyes will fall upon all the bounties that await her, Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) will recite the following verse from the Holy Quran: They will say: All praise belongs to Allah, who has removed all grief from us. Indeed our Lord is All-forgiving, All-appreciative, who has settled us in the everlasting abode by His grace. In it we are untouched by toil and untouched therein by fatigue’. (35:35-36)”. (Safeenatul-Bihaar)

Shiites of Fatimah (PBUH) on the Day of Judgment

As the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) has given glad tidings of Paradise to the Shiites of Amir al-Muminin (PBUH) and his Infallible descendents (PBUT) and praised their greatness and high status, likewise, he has given the glad tidings of Paradise to the Shiites of Lady Fatimah (PBUH) and praised them for the exact same virtues. Shia means follower, devotee, and disciple; thus, Shiites of Amir al-Muminin (PBUH) are those who achieve guidance from him and are his followers in their intentions, morals, and actions all the time. Similarly, Shiites of Lady Fatimah (PBUH) are those who follow her in their lives and imitate her in all the aspects of their lives. However, since all the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) follow the same path, Shiites of Lady Fatimah (PBUH) are considered to be equal to the Shiites of Amir al-Muminin (PBUH), as the Hadiths have mentioned. Hence, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) sometimes praises the Shiites of Amir al-Muminin (PBUH) and, at other times, praises the Shiites of Lady Fatimah (PBUH). This tradition of the Prophet illustrates that although Lady Fatimah (PBUH) herself is a follower of Amir al-Muminin (PBUH) in the straight path of guidance, yet, she is considered to be an independent model. When the Day of Judgment comes, my daughter will enter the gathering of people while on a camel from the camels of Paradise. The bridle of the camel is made of bright pearl and its feet are from green emerald... There is a knob (dome) of light on top of it, the outside of which is apparent from its inside and vise versa. The interior of this knob contains rays of Allahs (SWT) forgiveness, while the exterior manifests His mercy. There is a crown of light on top of the knob which has seventy pillars of pearl and ruby that shine like bright stars in the sky. The camel will be accompanied by seventy thousand angels on its left and seventy thousand angels on its right. Gabriel will hold the bridle of the camel and call with a loud voice: Cover your eyes so that Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, may cross. At that moment, even the Prophets, Siddiqin (the truthful ones), and the martyrs will close their eyes out of respect until Fatimah (PBUH) passes and stops in front of the throne of Allah (SWT). Then, Allah (SWT) will call, O my dear and the daughter of my dear one! Ask from me whatever you want so that I may grant it to you, and intercede for whomever you wish so that I would accept your intercession." Fatimah (PBUH) will reply, O my Lord and my Master! Rescue my progeny, my Shiites, my followers, my friends, and the friends of my progeny." Then, Allah (SWT) will say, Where are the progeny of Fatimah (PBUH) and her followers? Where are her friends and the friends of her progeny? At that point, a group of people will step forward, the angels will surround them from every direction, and Fatimah (PBUH) will lead them all together into Paradise. Beyond Cruelty

Certain characteristics distinguish Islam from other religions. An example can be seen in its introduction of Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.), whom a whole chapter of the Holy Quran is dedicated solely. Allah (SWT) has desired to prolong the presence of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.& h.f.) and his message through his family, unlike the previous prophets such as Prophet Nuh/Noah, Prophet Musa/Moses, and Prophet Isa/Jesus (PBUT). Allah (SWT) willed it so the progeny of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.& h.f.) would continue through a lady, Fatima (p.b.u.h.) (1). This is despite the fact that Allah (SWT) could have continued the progeny of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) through a set of sons, as he did with Prophet Abraham (p.b.u.h.). Fatima, al-Zahra, (p.b.u.h.) has a status unlike any other woman. Her attention and connection to her Lord is exemplary, and Allah (SWT) has praised her immensely for it. These matters can be found in many authentic historical accounts, even in works studied by the Sunni scholars. (2) Despite the differences, these works all seem to agree on one aspect, and that is the holiness of Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.). Upon this we come to the conclusion that if such a lady is mistreated, the offense is far more severe than any other. Her enemies created a fighting ground with the most sacred matter, the Holy Quran. For, according to Muslims, many of the verses in the Holy Quran were revealed about the Ahlulbait (PBUT), such as the verse of Tat-hir(3), the verse of Mawaddat(4), and the verse of Mubahilah (5). Although Muslims may disagree on aspects such as who are considered as the Ahlulbait, they all agree unanimously on the fact that Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.) is one of the Ahlulbait. And thus enmity with Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.) is enmity with the Holy Quran. In addition, enmity with Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.) is enmity with the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.& h.f.), the most highly revered face of mankind. To reiterate, oppression upon Fatima (p.b.u.h.) is oppression upon all religious values, of which the most important is the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.& h.f.). As the famous saying goes, "satisfying Fatimah (p.b.u.h.) means satisfying the Prophet and her anger is his anger;" (7) thus, oppressing her is equivalent to oppressing him. In addition, this enmity is enmity with a pious person. Many of the Prophet's narrations discuss the immense value a pious person is given by Allah (SWT). It is to the extent that his/her reverence is more significant than the reverence of Ka'bah among Muslims. (8) Such a comparison is huge for we are talking about the same Ka'bah which if disrespected, Allah (SWT) would not tolerate such disrespect for Ka'bah! Based on the Islamic teachings we also know that honor of an ordinary pious person is revered higher than that of the Ka'bah. Now we come back to the question of the value of a pious lady such as Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.), who, because of her relation to Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.& h.f.) on the one hand, and her devout character on the other, has been clearly placed in a position to truly be respected. In her praise, the verse of Tat-hir will suffice to reveal her character. Oppression upon such a person, therefore, is not held lightly; it is not some minor enmity; rather, it is the highest form of enmity upon humanity. Enmity with this lady is enmity with the status of a woman who holds a special position in Islam. Coming along these lines, humanity in itself holds a highly revered position for women. Thus, one of the most anguishing occasions for a man is to see his wife being oppressed in front of his eyes. It is because of this matter that it is said that the oppressions upon the family of Imam Hossain (p.b.u.h.) parallels the oppressions perpetrated upon Imam Hossain (p.b.u.h.). It is not the killings or the swords; rather, it is the disrespect done to the family of Imam Hossain (p.b.u.h.) through enslavement and the like, which is the great calamity. When we delve further into the life of Lady Fatima (p.b.u.h.), we find that she was the best example of a complete individual and a significant example of a holy lady in an Islamic society. Thus, enmity and oppression upon such a lady who holds the best position of a woman is enmity upon the feminine race. Was Fatima (p.b.u.h.), who holds such status, oppressed after the demise of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.& h.f.)? Where is her grave? What happened to the third grandson of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.& h.f.) whom the Prophet named as Muhsin and the Islamic scholars have identified him as the son of Fatima (p.b.u.h.)? Why his account is hardly talked discussed? History has a lot of untold mysteries? Footnotes 1. The society of that time considered woman an ugly and worthless creature, which could not pass the name of her father to the next generation.
