Moral virtues of Lady Fatema Zahra (A.S)‏

AHL AL-BAYT THE CELESTIAL BEINGS ON THE EARTH Author: Allama Hussein Ansariyan Translator: Dr. Ali Akbar Aghili Ashtiani Moral Virtues Of Lady Fatimah Note: Some persons die leaving no traces. Others leave an impact during their lifetime and are put into oblivion after their death. Others are influential throughout the time. Some people have a physical presence in history and they continue to live through their descendants, grandchildren, mausoleums, and such art works as those of Michael Angelo which are immortal in the west. Others are immortal by their behavior. In religious literature, we call this immortal behavior tradition. Still there are people who leave behind a heritage of spirituality and knowledge. Jesus Christ (a.s) and Aristotle are two examples respectively. To sum it up, some personalities have such an aptitude as to survive in history in one of the three dimensions we have just discussed. Nevertheless, Lady Fatimah, the daughter of the Holy Prophet, has gathered all the three dimensions in herself. Physically, Lady Fatimah (a.s) has fifty million descendants. The Imams and the righteous men are her offspring. There is no woman who has had such a tangible presence in history. In terms of mausoleums, it is something strange with Fatimah that when such famous personalities as Sa`di, Hafi¨, Avicenna, Shah Jahan and Nur Jahan in Taj Mahal have a physical presence though lacking a shrine, she continues to exist physically. This is really a paradox. Fatimah’s physical presence is highlighted when we know that the Fatimid Dynasty founded a ruling system in Africa in her name. The immortal epic of Nasir Khosrow `Alawi, ‘I am a Fatimid’ reflects the same physical presence. The al-Azhar University, the most famous scientific-religious center of Sunni Muslims in Egypt, was founded by the Fatimid rulers in commemoration of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra’. In terms of knowledge, Lady Fatimah has had a dynamic presence too. Sulayman Kittani, a Lebanese Christian writer, Louis Massigngon, a French Orientalist, and professor Henry Corban are some of the famous personalities who have written books on the heritage of knowledge which Lady Fatimah has left behind. As for model behavior in history, we should say that a young woman who did not live more than eighteen years left behind such tradition of behavior about which Imam al-Mahdi has said: وَفِي إبْنَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ لِي أسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ. There is a model for me in the daughter of Allah’s Messenger.[1] Sociologists believe that the reason behind crisis of the young generation in the third world is absence of behavior model. In this relation, Lady Fatimah serves as a model for all the youths, for she has a genuine personality with a halo of sanctity around her. What follows is a perspective of moral virtues and behavior of Lady Fatimah followed by the viewpoints of famous people. Enduring Hardships Imam al-Sadiq has reported: One day, the Holy Prophet entered Fatimah’s house and found her wearing a coarse dress, grinding flour with her own hands, and breastfeeding her son. Seeing this situation, his eyes were full of tears. Turning to her, he said, “O my honorable daughter! Endure the hardships of this world so as to attain the sweetness of the Hereafter.” Fatimah answered, “I praise Allah for His blessings and thank Him for His favor.”[2] At this time, the following verse was revealed: وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَى (5) And soon will your Lord give you so that you shall be well pleased. (93:5) Charity One day, Salman the Persian went to the door of Fatimah’s house to carry out the Holy Prophet’s order of preparing food for a newly Muslim Arab. Hearing Salman’s request, Fatimah said, “I swear by Allah that Hasan and Husayn went to sleep with empty stomach. Nevertheless, I would not reject a good deed especially that it has turned to my house. Salman, take this dress of mine to Simon the Jew and buy it for three kilos of dates and three kilos of barley!” Salman took the dress to Simon and told him the story. Simon’s eyes became tearful, saying, “This piety in this world is what (Prophet) Moses had foreseen in the Torah. Therefore, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Bihar al-Anwar: 178/53, Chapter: 314, H 9. [2] Al-Manaqib: 342/3. After converting to Islam, he gave three kilos of dates and barley to Salman who took it to Fatimah. She ground the barley with her own hands, baked it and gave it to Salman. He said, “O daughter of Allah’s Messenger! Take some of this for Hasan and Husayn.” Fatimah answered, “I will not take anything from what I have given away in the way of Allah.”[1] Ask More Questions A woman went to the presence of Lady Fatimah saying, “I am an old and weak mother who makes a lot of mistakes in my prayer. I have been sent to you to know how to perform my prayer.” Lady Fatimah said, “Ask any questions you wish.” The woman asked ten questions all of which were answered by Lady Fatimah with good miens. However, the woman was ashamed of her many questions; she said, “I will not bother you any more!” Lady Fatimah said, “Ask any more questions.” In order to boost her morale, she said, “If a person is asked to carry a heavy load to a high place and he is given a hundred thousand Dinars as reward, will he feel tired in view of that reward?” The woman said, “No.” Lady Fatimah (a.s) said, “I am rewarded by Allah more than it for every question which I answer. Hence, I never get tired. I heard Allah’s Messenger saying: On the Judgment Day, scholars will be in the presence of Allah and they will be rewarded to the extent of their knowledge and the efforts they have made for propagating Islam and guiding people.”[2] Neighbor First! Lady Fatimah used to pray Almighty Allah at night and weep out of His fear so heavily that it would awaken his children. Imam Hasan says: One Friday night, I saw my mother standing in the altar while she was in bowing and prostration positions until the dawn, praying for everybody except herself! I said: ‘Mother! Why aren’t you praying for yourself?’ She said: ‘My dear son! Neighbor first!’ Lady Fatimah (a.s) constantly reminded her children of Allah’s Messenger who counted children as bunches of flower. [3] Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal: 236/1. Intimacy With The Holy Qur’an The honorable daughter of the Holy Prophet had a strong intimacy with the Holy Qur’an. Salman reports: The Holy Prophet sent me to Fatimah’s house for doing something. I waited a little at the door until she saluted me. I heard her reciting the Holy Qur’an and grinding something without having someone to serve her.”[1] The Blessed Necklace Jabir Ansari has reported: After performing the Afternoon Prayer, the Holy Prophet sat in the altar of the mosque, speaking to people. At this time, an old Arab wearing threadbare clothes and unable to stand on his feet entered the mosque. Seeing him, the Holy Prophet consoled him and asked after his health. The old man said, “O Allah’s Messenger! I am hungry; I need food. I am naked; clothe me; I am indigent; give me something.” The Holy Prophet said, “I have nothing to give you. But the one who shows you to a benefactor is like one who has done the good. Go to the house of one who loves Allah and the Prophet and Allah and Prophet love her too; one who prefers Allah to herself. Go to Fatimah’s house which is in neighborhood. O Bilal! Guide this man to there.” The old man moved with Bilal. The old man stood near the door and in a loud voice and said, ألسَّلأمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أهْلَ بَيْتِ النُّبُوَّةِ، وَمُخْتَلَفِ الْمَلأئِكَةِ، وَمَهْبِطِ جِبْرَئِيلَ الرُّوحِ الأمِينِ بِالتَّنْزِيلِ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ. “Peace be upon you O Household of the Prophet! You are the seal of the Divine mission; unto you the angels turn from the presence of the Lord of the world.” Lady Fatimah answered from within the house, “Blessings and peace of Allah be upon you. May I know who you are and what you need?” The old man softly and gently said, “I am an old Arab. I am hungry and I do not have clothes and I am helpless. I went to your beloved father, Allah’s Messenger, and he sent me here.” It was three days she and her family had not had anything to eat. It was three days since hunger had struck her home. It was three days since water was the only food for them but for Fatimah it was not a matter of hesitation or doubt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Bihar al-Anwar: 46/43. She had nothing but a small sheepskin which she used as a carpet and bedding for her beloved sons. She gathered it up and with an apology presented it to the old man, saying, “I hope Allah will give you better than this.” But the old man did not take it saying, “O daughter of the Prophet! What can I do with this? I am hungry!” Fatimah, looking astonished, glanced around the small house so that she could find something else. Suddenly she remembered the necklace that her cousin (Hamzah’s daughter) had given her.. She quickly unfastened it and gave it to the old man; saying, “Sell it and I hope Allah will solve your Problem!” The old man took the necklace, blessed her and returned to the Prophet. The Prophet, upon hearing from the old man what had happened, said with tears in his eyes, “By all means your problems will be solved because the doyenne of the world women has blessed you with it.” `Ammar ibn Yasir, who had been watching, moved closer to the Prophet, saying, “O Allah’s Messenger! Will you give me permission to buy this necklace?” The Prophet said, “`Ammar, whoever buys this necklace will be saved from Hellfire.” `Ammar turned to the old man and asked, “How much will you sell this necklace for?” The old man replied, “I need money to buy clothes and food, and money for my journey so that I can go to my city. I will sell it for that much money.” `Ammar who had sold his share of booty from the Battle of Khaybar and had a little money said, “I will give you 20 Dinars and 200 Dirhams for this necklace.” The old man’s eyes shone with happiness. He said, “You are a generous man.” `Ammar gave to him what he had promised. The old man came to the Holy Prophet who asked him, “Are you satisfied now?” The man said, “Yes, may my parents be your ransom!” The Holy Prophet said, “So give a reward to Fatimah for what she has done for you.” The old man raised his hand in prayer saying, “O Allah! Bless Fatimah with what no one has so far seen or heard about!” Allah’s Messenger said Amen to the old man’s prayer, turned to his companions and said, “Allah has granted this to Fatimah in this world: I am her father and no one in the world is like me. `Ali is her husband and were he not there, there would be no espouse for her. Hasan and Husayn are her sons who are the leaders of the youths of Paradise.” The Holy Prophet, who was sitting with Miqdad, `Ammar and Salman, said, “Should I say more about Fatimah?” They said, “Yes, Allah’s Messenger!” So he said, “Gabriel came to me saying: ‘When the soul of Fatimah is grasped and she is buried in her grave, two angels will ask her: Who is your Lord? She will say: Allah is my Lord. When she is asked who is your friend she will say: The one who is near my grave, `Ali ibn Abu- Talib.’ Be aware that Allah has assigned a group of angels to protect her from ahead as well as from the right and left sides. They are with her in her lifetime and her grave, constantly saluting her, her father, her husband, and her children. So whoever visits my grave after my death has indeed visited me in my lifetime; whoever visits Fatimah has indeed visited me; whoever visits `Ali ibn Abu-Talib has indeed visited Fatimah; whoever visits Hasan and Husayn has indeed visited `Ali; and whoever visits the offspring of Hasan and Husayn has indeed visited the two Imams.” Hearing this, `Ammar took the necklace, perfumed it with scent, put it in an expensive cloth, called his slave and said, “Take this to the Prophet and after this you will belong to him.” The slave took the necklace to the Prophet and told him what `Ammar had said. The Holy Prophet said, “Give my regards to Fatimah, give her the necklace and tell her that you are now in her custody.” Fatimah took the necklace in surprise and told the slave, “You are free in the way of Allah.” The slave started laughing and said, “I am surprised at the blessings of this necklace. It has satisfied a hungry person, clothed a naked person, fulfilled the needs of another, freed a slave and in the end returned to its owner.”[1] Fatimah’s Bequest Sayyid Muhsin al-Amin reports: Lady Fatimah had seven orchards which she endowed to Banu-Hashim and Banu’l-Muttalib, appointing `Ali and after him Hasan and Husayn as custodian. Said about Lady Fatimah Quoting from Sharh al-Masabih, Zayn al-Arab says: Fatimah was called batul meaning broken off, no one was like her in virtue. Quoting from al-Manaqib, al-Harawi says: Fatimah was called batul meaning interrupted because she was matchless. Kamal al-Din Muhammad ibn Talhah al-Shafi`i has said: Fatimah was endowed with virtues which were particular to her. She enjoyed features for one of which the honorable souls competed. Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Dhahabi has said: There are many sources of pride for Fatimah. She was tolerant, benefactor, contented, and grateful. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Bisharat al-Mustafa: 137. The Lebanese Christian writer, Sulayman Kittani says: Fatimah was chaste. She was the paragon of the Holy Prophet’s virtues which had become fruitful with a genius for morality and creativity. Her weak body was the vessel of her crystal soul so as to be effaced in the source from which her father dawned. `A’ishah has said: I found no one superior to Fatimah except her father. The Egyptian scholar, Bint al-Shati says: Fatimah was the most beloved among the Holy Prophet’s daughters and the most similar to him in terms of temperament and constitution. Allah willed that only she would be subject to purification and the mother of all the Imams from the progeny of the Holy Prophet. In his book, Nafahat min Sirat al-Sayyidah Zaynab (Fragrances from Lady Zaynab’s Conducts), professor Ahmad Shams Basi points out: Fatimah was the best among the world women and the doyenne of the women in the Hereafter. Dr. `Ali Ibrahim Hasan has said: Fatimah’s life is a unique page among the pages of history in whom we see all grandeur and magnitude. We stand before a personality that came into existence with a halo of wisdom and splendor around her; a wisdom the source of which cannot be found in philosophers’ books but the outcome of spiritual experiences and a splendor not coming from kings or wealth but coming from the very depth of her soul. Perhaps it was Fatimah’s unique grandeur that compelled `A’ishah to say: I found no one superior to Fatimah except her father.[1]

9.Imam Baqir (A.S.) said: One prayer in the Masjid-al-Haram is 100000 times more valuable than one prayer in any other mosques. 10.Imam Sadiq (A.S.) said to Ibn-Abi-Yafour: Pray very much in the Prophet's mosque, for praying in this mosque is equal to same 1000 prayers in other mosques, except Masjid-al-Haram that same prayers in this mosque is equal to same 1000 prayers in the Prophet's mosque. وَإِذْ جَعَلْنَا الْبَيْتَ مَثَابَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَمْناً وَاتَّخِذُواْ مِن مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى وَعَهِدْنَا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ أَن طَهِّرَا بَيْتِيَ لِلطَّائِفِينَ وَالْعَاكِفِينَ وَالرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ {125}[ Holy Quran 2:125] And when We made the House a pilgrimage for men and a (place of) security, and: Appoint for yourselves a place of prayer on the standing-place of Ibrahim. And We enjoined Ibrahim and Ismail saying: Purify My House for those who visit (it) and those who abide (in it) for devotion and those who bow down (and) those who prostrate themselves. وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَـَذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ مَنْ آمَنَ مِنْهُم بِاللّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ قَالَ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَأُمَتِّعُهُ قَلِيلاً ثُمَّ أَضْطَرُّهُ إِلَى عَذَابِ النَّارِ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ {126}[ Holy Quran 2:126] And when Ibrahim said: My Lord, make it a secure town and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the last day. He said: And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a short while, then I will drive him to the chastisement of the fire; and it is an evil destination. (241007) وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَاعِيلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ {127}[ Holy Quran 2:127] And when Ibrahim and Ismail raised the foundations of the House: Our Lord! accept from us; surely Thou art the Hearing, the Knowing: 4. إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَآئِرِ اللّهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلاَ جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ اللّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ Holy Quran 2 : 158 Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah; so whoever makes a pilgrimage to the House or pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both; and whoever does good spontaneously, then surely Allah is Grateful, Knowing. (26102007) 5.Imam Ali ibn Hussain Zainul Abedin (A.S.) says: Perform Hajj and Umrah rituals in order to be safe and sound, to make it better living for your family and make a better life. 6.Imam Ali ibn Hussain Zainul Abedin (A.S.) says: Pilgrim of God's House will be forgiven, and he is entitled to go to heaven and his family and possessions will be safe and immune. (16082008) وَأَتِمُّواْ الْحَجَّ وَالْعُمْرَةَ لِلّهِ فَإِنْ أُحْصِرْتُمْ فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ وَلاَ تَحْلِقُواْ رُؤُوسَكُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْهَدْيُ مَحِلَّهُ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيضاً أَوْ بِهِ أَذًى مِّن رَّأْسِهِ فَفِدْيَةٌ مِّن صِيَامٍ أَوْ صَدَقَةٍ أَوْ نُسُكٍ فَإِذَا أَمِنتُمْ فَمَن تَمَتَّعَ بِالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَى الْحَجِّ فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فِي الْحَجِّ وَسَبْعَةٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ تِلْكَ عَشَرَةٌ كَامِلَةٌ ذَلِكَ لِمَن لَّمْ يَكُنْ أَهْلُهُ حَاضِرِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ {196}[The Quran 2:196] And accomplish the pilgrimage and the visit for Allah, but if, you are prevented, (send) whatever offering is easy to obtain, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its destination; but whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head, he (should effect) a compensation by fasting or alms or sacrificing, then when you are secure, whoever profits by combining the visit with the pilgrimage (should take) what offering is easy to obtain; but he who cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage and for seven days when you return; these (make) ten (days) complete; this is for him whose family is not present in the Sacred Mosque, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in requiting (evil).(15092008) الْحَجُّ أَشْهُرٌ مَّعْلُومَاتٌ فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ الْحَجَّ فَلاَ رَفَثَ وَلاَ فُسُوقَ وَلاَ جِدَالَ فِي الْحَجِّ وَمَا تَفْعَلُواْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ يَعْلَمْهُ اللّهُ وَتَزَوَّدُواْ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَى وَاتَّقُونِ يَا أُوْلِي الأَلْبَابِ {197}[ The Quran 2:197] The pilgrimage is (performed in) the well-known months; so whoever determines the performance of the pilgrimage therein, there shall be no intercourse nor fornication nor quarrelling amongst one another; and whatever good you do, Allah knows it; and make provision, for surely the provision is the guarding of oneself, and be careful (of your duty) to Me, O men of understanding.(04102008) وَاذْكُرُواْ اللّهَ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَّعْدُودَاتٍ فَمَن تَعَجَّلَ فِي يَوْمَيْنِ فَلاَ إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ وَمَن تَأَخَّرَ فَلا إِثْمَ عَلَيْهِ لِمَنِ اتَّقَى وَاتَّقُواْ اللّهَ وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ {203}[The Quran 2:203] And laud Allah during the numbered days; then whoever hastens off in two days, there is no blame on him, and whoever remains behind, there is no blame on him, (this is) for him who guards (against evil), and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you shall be gathered together to Him.(08102008) 7.Imam Sadiq (A.S.) said: The best ways to pray God include silence and going to His House. 8.Imam Baqir (A.S.) said: God does not accept the Hajj and Umrah whose costs have been paid for through illegal means property. (Religiously prohibited). It's been narrated from Isaac Ibn Ammar that Imam Sadiq (A.S.) said: O Isaac, everyone who circumambulates God's House one time, God writes down 1000 good deeds for him, vanishes 1000 of his sins, gives him 1000 rewards, plants 1000 trees fro him in Paradise, gives him mercifully the recompense for delivering 1000 slaves. When he reaches "Moltazem", 8 doors of Heaven open and he is told: "Enter whichever door you wish". Isaac said: "I said to Imam that all of those are for a person who just circumambulates God's House"? Imam stated: "Yes. Wouldn't I teach you a bigger recompense? "I said: "Please, teach me. "He said: "Everyone who does something for his faithful brothers, God will give him the recompense of 10 circumambulations."

DAY OF EID UL FITR -1st SHAWWAL‏

THE DAY OF EID UL FITR -1st SHAWWAL EiEid ul Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadhan. We say farewell to the blessed month, its beautiful days and its fragrant nights. We leave the month of seeking nearness to Ar Rahmaan, the school of Imaan and an opportunity to recharge our spiritual batteries. In the previous nights, we prayed, offered charity and attended lectures. What will happen now? Have we fulfilled the requirements of Taqwa and graduated from this school with the diploma of the God Fearing? The night of Eid ul fitr is a majestic night. It is beneficial to keep awake for Ibadah as this night is of equal importance as the night of Qadr. Eid must not just mark the ‘end’ of Ramadhan. Rather, it should be a new beginning, where we emulate our character and Islamic values, which we have focused upon for the past 30 days. We are like a child out of the womb, pure and innocent. Eid is the day of victory as we have succeeded in subduing our desires and purified ourselves. Lets not wash away our good deeds and revert to our merry old ways. Let the masjid still overflow with worshippers, let the Quran be the most essential part of our lives instead of letting it gather dust on our shelves. Our condition should be better than before Ramadhan month. Eid is not just a ritual that provides us with an excuse to enjoy ourselves. It represents important values and participating in them, we seek to please the Almighty and attain nearness to Him. Eid al-Fitr is a great day of festival for Muslims. It is a day of rejoicing and being happy. But for whom? Is it the day of rejoicing for those who simply put on new clothes and wear perfume? Or is it the day of being happy for those who were eagerly waiting for the release of the greatest enemy of mankind, Satan, from his captivity so that they all revert to committing sins? Unfortunately, many Muslims abstain from sins during the month of Ramadhan, but come Eid, they go back to what they were before! Cassettes of prayers, which were in their cars during the holy month, are thrown back into their cases and replaced with those, which are unlawful, by Shari'ah. The forbidden places from which they had abstained for month long, are infact the same places they go to celebrate Eid. Just as, when a person goes to a college, or a university and at the completion of his course, he receives his award marking his achievement, we must understand that, the holy month of Ramadhan is a spiritual university where we are being trained to achieve Taqwa i.e. piety. The day of Eid al-Fitr is when Allah (SWT) is awarding us for our achievements. On the day of Eid al-Fitr, Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (as) delivered a sermon in which he said: "O people! Verily this day of yours is the day when the righteous are awarded and the wretched are losers. It is a day which is similar to the one on which you shall be standing (before your Lord). Therefore, when you come out of your homes to go to places of your prayer, remind yourselves about the day when you (your souls) shall come out of your bodies to go to your Lord. When you stand on places of your prayer, remind yourselves of your standing in presence of your Lord (on the day of Judgement). And when you return to your homes (after prayer), remind yourselves about your returning to your homes in Paradise. O Servants of Allah! Verily the minimum reward for those men and women who fasted (during Ramadhan), is an Angel, who calls out to them on the last day of the month of Ramadhan (saying): O SERVANTS OF ALLAH! REJOICE THE GLAD TIDING THAT ALL YOUR PREVIOUS SINS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN. Therefore, watch out in those things which serve as your re-creation (on this day and days to follow)" Nahjul-Balaghah) EID A’Aamal 1. Recite Takbeeraat (Allah is Great . Allah is Great . There is no god save Allah. And Allah is Great. Allah is Great. (All) praise be to Allah. (We) sing the praises of Allah because He has shown us the Right Path. (We) gratefully thank Him because He takes care of us and looks after our interests.) ALLAAHU AKBAR ALLAAHU AKBAR LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAH WALLAAHU AKBAR ALLAAHU AKBAR WA LILLAAHIL H’AMDUL H’AMDU LILLAAH A’LAA MAA HADAA NAA WA LAHUSH SHUKRU A’LAA MAA AWLAAANAA 2. Give Zakaat-e-Fitra, which is 3 kilograms of the item commonly eaten per person in the house and it is better give it before Eed Salaat This is an emphasized Waajib, it is a means of acceptance of our A’amaal during Maahe Ramadhaan and it is also a safeguard against death. 3. Make Ghusl. Recite this Duaa before it: O Allah, believing in Thee, fully aware of Thy Book, following the way of life of Thy Prophet Muhammad, Allah's blessings be on him and on his children, (I take bath). allahumma emanan bika wa tasdedan bikitabika wattiba`a sunnati nabiyyika muhammadin salla allahu `layhi wa alihi اللّهُمّ إِيمَاناً بِكَ وَتَصْدِيقاً بِكِتَابِكَ وَاتّبَاعَ سُنّةِ نَبِيّكَ مُحَمّدٍ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ. Allaahumma Eemanan Bika Wa Tasdeeqan Bi Kitaabika Wa Ittibaa’a Sunnati Nabiyyika Muhammadin Swallallaahu Alayhi Wa Aalihee. Then recite Bismillaah… and start making Ghusl, after finishing recite this Duaa: O Allah let me make amends and compensate for my wrong doings, (so that) my religion becomes pure and O Allah remove the dirt from me. allahumma ij`alhu kaffarattan lidhunube wa tahhir dene allahumma adh-hib `anniya alddanasa اللّهُمّ اجْعَلْهُ كَفَّارَةً لِذُنُوبِي وَطَهّرْ دِينِي. اللّهُمّ أَذْهِبْ عَنّي الدّنَسَ. Allaahummaj’alhoo Kaffaaratan Li Dhunoobee Wa Twahhir Deenee Allaahumma Adh’hib Annid-Danas. 4. Recite Eed-Salaat. 5. Recite Ziyaarat of Imam Husayn (A.S.) 6. Recite Duaa-e-Nudbaa. Sayyid Ibn Tawus has instructed, saying: After recitation of the Du`a' al-Nudbah, prostrate yourself and say the following: أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ نَارٍ حَرّهَا لا يُطْفأُ a`udhu bika min narin harruha la yutfa'u I seek refuge with Thee from the Fire whose hot flames do not get extinguished or grow dim, وَجَدِيدُهَا لا يَبْلَى wa jadeduha la yabla whose energetic intensity does not loose its severity, وَعَطْشَانُهَا لا يُرْوَى. wa `atshanuha la yurwa wherein parched throats never get quenched. You may then put your right cheek on the ground and say the following: O Allah do not throw me down head on into the Fire after I have prostrated in adoration before Thee and thrown myself on the ground to humble myself before Thee; it is not a show of favour from me unto Thee but it is (Thy) merciful benevolence Thou bestows on me. ilahe la tuqallib wajhiya finnari ba`da sujude wa ta`fere laka bighayri mannin minne `alayka bal laka almannu `alayya إِلهِي لا تُقَلّبْ وَجْهِي فِي النَّارِ بَعْدَ سُجُودِي وَتَعْفِيرِي لَكَ بِغَيْرِ مَنّ مِنّي عَلَيْكَ بَلْ لَكَ الْمَنّ عَلَيّ. You may then put your left cheek on the ground and say the following: Have mercy on him who has transgressed and committed blunders, (but) now ashamed surrenders (to Thee) to receive absolution. irham man asa'a waqtarafa wastakana wa`tarafa ارْحَمْ مَنْ أَسَاءَ وَاقْتَرَفَ وَاسْتَكَانَ وَاعْتَرَفَ. You may then return to the (ordinary) prostration and say the following: I am a troublesome servant but Thou art the bountiful Lord-Nourisher. A great many mistakes have been committed by Thy servant but O Compassionate, from Thee (only) Lenient treatment is expected. in kuntu bi'sa al`abdu fa anta ni`ma alrrabbu `a¨uma aldhdhanbu min `abdika falyahsun al`afwa min `indika ya karemu إِنْ كُنْتُ بِئْسَ الْعَبْدُ فَأَنْتَ نِعْمَ الرّبّ، عَظُمَ الذّنْبُ مِنْ عَبْدِكَ فَلْيَحْسُنِ الْعَفْوُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ يَا كَرِيمُ. You may then repeat the following one hundred times: (I plead for) pardon; (I plead for) pardon. al`afwa al`afwa اَلْعَفْوَ، اَلْعَفْوَ Sayyid Ibn Tawus, then, adds, “Do not spend this day with entertainment and negligence while you do not know whether your deeds have been accepted or rejected. Rather, if you hope of acceptance of your deeds, you must show thanks; and if you anticipate rejection, you must be intensely sad.” It is recommended not to leave one’s house for joining the congregational Eid al-Fitr Prayer before sunrise. It is also recommended to say the supplications that have been mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in “Iqbal al-A`mal”. One of these supplications is that Abu-Hamzah al-Thumali has reported Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s) as saying, “Whey you ready yourself for joining the congregational Friday Prayers and the Eid Prayers, you may say the following supplication: اللّهُمّ مَنْ تَهَيّأَ فِي هذَا الْيَوْمِ allahumma man tahayya'a fe hadha alyawmi O Allah (may be), today, some (people) make up their mind, أَوْ تَعَبّأَ أَوْ أَعَدّ وَاسْتَعَدّ aw ta`abba'a aw a`adda wa ista`adda or take pains, or get ready and prepare the ground, لِوِفَادَةٍ إِلَى مَخْلُوقٍ liwifadin ila makhluqin to turn to (other) people, رَجَاءَ رِفْدِهِ وَنَوَافِلِهِ raja'a rifdihi wa nawafilihi hopeful of getting favors, gifts, وَفَوَاضِلِهِ وَعَطَايَاهُ wa fawa¤ilihi wa `atayahu benefits and grants, فَإِنّ إِلَيْكَ يَاسَيّدِي تَهْيِئَتِي وَتَعْبِئَتِي fa inna ilayka ya sayyide tahyi'ate wa ta`bi'ate but I take a decisive step, exert myself, وَإِعْدَادِي وَاسْتِعْدَادِي wa i`dade wasti`dade make myself ready and smooth the way, رَجَاءَ رِفْدِكَ وَجَوَائِزِكَ raja'a rifdika wa jawa'izika and turn hopeful unto Thee, O my Master, to obtain favors, compensations, وَنَوَافِلِكَ وَفَوَاضِلِكَ wa nawafilika wa fawa¤ilika gifts, benefits, وَفَضَائِلِكَ وَعَطَايَاكَ، wa fa¤a'ilika wa `atayaka bounties and grants from Thee only, وَقَدْ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى عِيدٍ مِنْ أَعْيَادِ أُمّةِ نَبِيّكَ مُحَمّدٍ wa qad ghadawtu ila `edin min a`yadi ummati nabiyyika muhammadin and find myself celebrating one of the `«d days, commemorated by the followers of Thy Prophet, Muhammad صَلَوَاتُ اللّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ، salawatu allahi `alayhi wa `ala alihi (blessings of Allah be on him and on his children); وَلَمْ أَفِدْ إِلَيْكَ الْيَوْمَ بِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ أَثِقُ بِهِ قَدّمْتُهُ، wa lam afid ilayka alyawma bi`amalin salihin athiqu bihe qaddamtuhu (may be) I am not carrying (a weighty load of) good deeds, while approaching Thee, وَلا تَوَجّهْتُ بِمَخْلُوقٍ أَمّلْتُهُ، wala tawajjahtu bimakhluqin ammaltuhu nor am I introducing a creature as my interceder before You وَلكِنْ أَتَيْتُكَ خَاضِعاً wa lakin ataytuka kha¤i`an instead submissively draw near Thee مُقِرّاً بِذُنُوبِي وَإِسَاءَتِي إِلَى نَفْسِي، muqiran bidhunube wa isa'ate ila nafse ashamed of the wrong-doings done to my ownself. فَيَا عَظِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ faya `a¨emu ya `a¨emu ya `a¨emu So, O Almighty, O Almighty, O Almighty, اغْفِرْ لِيَ الْعَظِيمَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي، ighfir liya al`a¨ema min dhunube forgive me of my grave wrongdoings, فَإِنّهُ لا يَغْفِرُ الذّنُوبَ الْعِظَامَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ fa innahe la yaghfiru aldhdhunuba al`i¨ama illa anta because verily, no one can forgive the serious transgressions save Thou, يَا لا إِلهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ ya la ilaha alla anta O "There is no god save Thou", يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ. ya arhama alrrahimena O the most merciful of all the merciful. SALAT Al - EID The Eid Prayer (Salat al-`«d) consists of two Rak`ahs. In the first Rak`ah, one may recite Surah of al-Fatihah and Surah of al-A`la (No. 87). After the recitation of these Surahs, one may say the takber statement (i.e. allahu-akbar) five times and raise the hands for the Qunut after each takber, saying: اللّهُمّ أَهْلَ الْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ، allahumma ahla alkibriya‘i wal-`a¨amati O Allah: You are the Lord of glory and greatness وَأَهْلَ الْجُودِ وَالْجَبَرُوتِ، wa ahla aljudi wal-jabaruti And the Lord of magnanimity and omnipotence وَأَهْلَ الْعَفْوِ وَالرّحْمَةِ، wa ahla al-`afwi wal-rrahmati And the Lord of pardon and mercy, وَأَهْلَ التّقْوَى وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ، wa ahla alttaqwa wal-maghfirati And the worthiest of being feared and the Lord of forgiveness; أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقّ هذَا الْيَوْمِ الّذِي جَعَلْتَهُ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ عِيداً، as’aluka bihaqqi hadha aliyawmi alladhy ja`altahu lilmuslimena `edan I beseech You in the name of this day, which You have decided to be feast for the Muslims, وَلِمُحَمّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِه ذُخْراً وَمَزِيداً wa limuhammadin salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi dhukhran wa mazedan And to be safety and increasing honor for Muhammad—peace of Allah be upon him and his Household— أَنْ تُصَلّيَ عَلَى مُحَمّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمّدٍ an tusalliya `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin (I beseech You) that You may send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, وَأَنْ تُدْخِلَنِي فِي كُلّ خَيْرٍ أَدْخَلْتَ فِيهِ مُحَمّداً وَآلَ مُحَمّدٍ، wa an tudkhilany fe kulli khayrin adkhalta fehi muhammadan wa ala muhammadin And You may include me with every item of goodness with which You have included Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, وَأَنْ تُخْرِجَنِي مِنْ كُلِّ سُوءٍ أَخْرَجْتَ مِنْهُ مُحَمّداً وَآلَ مُحَمّدٍ wa an tukhrijany min kulli su‘in akhrajta minhu muhammadan wa ala muhammadin And that You save me from any item of evil from which You have saved Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمْ. salawatuka `alayhi wa `alayhim May Your blessings be upon him and upon them. اللّهُمّ إِنّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ، allahumma inne as’aluka khayra ma sa’alaka `ibaduka alssalihuna O Allah: I pray You for the best of all that for which Your righteous servants have prayed You, وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِمَّا اسْتَعَاذَ مِنْهُ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ. wa a`udhu bika mimma ista`adha minhu `ibaduka alssalihuna And I seek Your protection against all that against which Your righteous servants have asked Your protection. You may then say the takber for the sixth time, and do the genuflection (ruku`), and prostrate yourself (sujud). When you stand up for the second Rak`ah, recite Surah of al-Fatihah and Surah of al-Shams (No. 91) and then say the takber four times only raising the hands for the Qunut after each takber. After that, say the fifth takber and continue the prayer. After accomplishment of the prayer, say the famous Tasbeh al-Zahra' (a.s). Narrations have mentioned many supplications to be said after the `«d Prayer; rather the best of them may be the forty-fifth supplication of al-Sahefah al-Kamilah al-Sajjadiyyah. It is recommended to offer the Eid Prayer outdoors, directly on the ground without putting a carpet or any other thing under the feet, to return from a way other than the one taken in the coming, to pray Almighty Allah for accepting the acts of one’s brethren-in-faith.

Disposal of Fitra, important rules

(As per Ayatullah Seestani's 'Islamic laws) 1. It is Wajib to give Fitra to the needy in your hometown first. It is not necessary to tell that the money given to the needy is of Fitrah. 2. Fitrah from a non-Sayyid cannot be given to a needy Sayyid; the reverse is permissible 3. A needy should be given at least one Fitrah. 4. FITRA CAN BE GIVEN TO: Any Shia Ithna Asheri who is poor; but preference has been given to: a. Needy blood relations; b. Needy neighbors; c. Needy scholars. 5. Fitrah for a person is given on a weight of three kilograms (one sa'a) on any food commodity like wheat, rice. 6. The money for Fitra can be given to any Organization who undertakes the responsibility of buying the grain and passing it on to the people who are liable for receiving Zakaat. CAN WE GIVE FITRAH IN ADVANCE? Giving Fitrah before the eve of Eidul Fitr is not permissible. However, if you wish to send Fitrah earlier so that it reaches the needy on Eid day, then send it out as a temporary loan to the needy and then change your intention to Fitrah on the eve of Eid. Imamat and Nahjul Balagha: A Perspective

There is a famous tradition from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) recorded by both - the Shias and the Ahle Sunnah traditionalists: 'One who dies without recognizing the Imam of his time, dies the death of ignorance.' This means that even if a person accepts and conforms to all the Islamic beliefs and puts in practice all the edicts, but dies without recognizing the Imam of his time, his death will be on ignorance and apostasy. Such a person is condemned to eternal Hellfire regardless of his deeds in this world. This is because good deeds will only benefit a person provided his beliefs are correct, as espoused by the Quran and traditions. Hence, any person, who wants to secure himself from the raging fire of hell, should necessarily possess the recognition of the Imam of his time and not simply rely on his worship and virtuous deeds. Two kinds of Imams The Holy Quran has mentioned two types of leaders (Imams). The first type is the one who leads the people towards Hell. Allah declares in Surah Qasas, verse 41, 'And We made them Imams who call to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they shall not be assisted.' It means that the end of the one who accepts such an Imam will be in Hell. The second group of Imams guides the people by Allah's command. Surah Sajdah, verse 24 points out 'And We made of them Imams to guide by Our command when they were patient, and they were certain of Our communications.' 'Say: Is there any of your associates who guides to the truth? Say: Allah guides to the truth. Is He then Who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or he who himself does not go aright unless he is guided? What then is the matter with you; how do you judge?' (Surah Yunus, Verse 35) Ameerul Momineen Ali (a.s.) has described the characteristics of both kinds of Imams in his orations. 'The reality of people is not understood by their names but by the pattern of their behavior and mannerisms. Just as clothes hide the defects of the body, external manners cloak the defects of the soul. A connection of the soul is a necessity between the Imam and the follower. If a person (i.e. Imam) is not pious in his own heart, he will not be able to guide his followers towards piety and servitude. Hence if we desire Heaven and want to safeguard our eternal life from the chastisement of the Hellfire, then we have to search for an Imam whose inner and outer selves both are complete manifestations of divine command. Such an Imam must necessarily be adorned with piety completely, i.e. must be an infallible. We will discuss the characteristics of the Imam of Hellfire and the Imam who guides to the truth, in the light of the sermons of Hazrat Ali (a.s.). The Imam of the Hellfire '…certainly, the worst man before Allah is the oppressive Imam who has gone astray and through whom others go astray. He destroys the accepted Sunnah and revives abandoned innovations. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) predict - On the Day of Judgment the oppressive Imam will be brought without anyone to support him or anyone to advance excuses on his behalf, and then he will be thrown into Hell, where he will rotate as the hand-mill rotates. Then eventually he will be confined to its hollow.' (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 164, vol. 1, pg. 608-609, Ansariyan Publications) An oppressor is not only the one who usurps the rights of others and persecutes others. The Quran declares, '…and whoever exceeds the limits of Allah these it is that are the unjust.' (Surah Baqarah, Verse 229) These include those disobedient of Allah's commands, who have violated His edicts and exceeded His limits. The Quran further proclaims, 'and whoever did not judge by what Allah revealed, those are they that are the unjust.' (Surah Maidah, Verse 45) If somebody makes additions to the religion or forbids an obligation, he has violated the divine command which tantamount to injustice. Therefore, any person who has not been appointed an Imam by Allah and he claims this position for himself, he has transgressed the limits of Allah and has disregarded Allah's orders. He is a tyrannical and an oppressive leader, whose end has been described above in Hazrat Ali's (a.s.) sermon. Indeed the Holy Quran condemns even those people as oppressors who befriend such persons - '…and whoever makes friends with them, these are the unjust.' (Surah Mumtahenah, Verse 9) Imam of light and guidance Ameerul Momineen Ali (a.s.) outlines the characteristics of the just and rightly guided Imam, 'You should know that among the creatures of Allah, the most distinguished person before Allah is the just Imam who has been guided (by Allah) and guides others. So, he stands by the recognized ways of the Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) behavior (Sunnah) and destroys the innovations. The (Prophet's (s.a.w.a.)) ways are clear and they have signs, while innovations are also clear and they too have signs.' (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 164, vol. 1, pg. 608, Ansariyan Publications) In another sermon, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) declares, 'Certainly the Imams are the vicegerents of Allah over His creatures and they introduce Allah to His creatures. None will enter Paradise except he who recognizes them (Imams) and knows Allah, and no one will enter Hell except he who rejects them and denies Him. (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 152, vol. 1, pg. 554, Ansariyan Publications) He elaborates on this further, 'O my Allah! You know that it was neither our (Ahle Bait) objective to seek power, nor to acquire anything from the treasures of the world. Rather we wanted to restore the signs of Your religion and to spread prosperity into Your cities so that the oppressed among Your creatures may be safe and Your forsaken commands could be established. O my Allah! I am the first who was inclined (towards Thee) and who heard and responded (to the call of Islam). No one preceded me in prayer except the Prophet (s.a.w.a.).' 'You certainly know that he who is in charge of honor, life, booty, (enforcement of) legal commands and the leadership of the Muslims should not be a miser as his greed would aim at their wealth. Similarly he should not be ignorant as he would then mislead them with his ignorance, nor should he be rude as he would estrange them with his rudeness. He should not be unjust in distributing wealth by preferring one group to another, nor should he accept bribes while taking decisions, as he would forfeit the rights of some and decree without decisiveness, nor should he ignore the Sunnah as he would ruin the people. (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 131, vol. 1, pg. 496, Ansariyan Publications) By referring to these brilliant sermons, it becomes abundantly clear that the leader and Imam who possesses the following characteristics can alone guide the people towards the truth. 1. He is guided. 2. He guides others towards the true path. 3. He enlivens the Sunnah. 4. He destroys innovations. 5. His recognition is the cause of deliverance for the people. 6. His rejection is the cause of eternal chastisement. 7. He does not desire worldly power and authority. 8. He does not crave for the treasures of the world. 9. He makes manifest the signs of religion. 10. He establishes peace and tranquility in Allah's cities. 11. He provides shelter to His oppressed servants. 12. He revives the forgotten commands. 13. He is not a miser. 14. He is not ignorant. 15. His traits and mannerisms are not evil and wicked. 16. He is not a coward. 17. He is not a corrupt. 18. He does not destroy the Sunnah. Imam Ali (a.s.) highlights the above points in another sermon, 'Certainly, there is no obligation on the Imam except what has been devolved on him from Allah, namely to convey warnings, to exhort and advice, to revive the Sunnah, enforce penalties on those liable and issue shares to the deserving.' (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 105, vol. 1, pg. 400, Ansariyan Publications) The Ahle Bait (a.s.) If we search for the characteristics of the rightly guided Imam, we find that these traits are present only in the pure and infallible members of the Ahle Bait (a.s.). Hazrat Ali (a.s.) exhorts, 'Look at the people of the Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) family - Ahle Bait (a.s.). Adhere to their direction. Follow their footsteps because they will never misguide you, and never throw you into destruction. If they sit down, you too must sit down, and if they rise, you also rise. Do not go ahead of them, as you will go astray and do not lag behind them, as you will be ruined. (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 97, vol. 1, pg. 378, Ansariyan Publications) 'Where are those people who have lied and have tormented us and have deceitfully claimed that they are 'the ones firmly rooted in knowledge' and not us? (They lie against us and covet over position) because Allah, the All-Merciful has exalted our status and has made them inferior to us. He has conferred upon us an eminence from which He prevented them from surpassing us. He allowed us entry to the transcendental sphere of divine revelation, which He denied them. Remember that guidance could be acquired and ignorance could be dispelled through us only. Undoubtedly the Imams shall be from the Quraish, from the Bani Hashim. This divine appointment has been made for this august progeny, and none else deserves this sublime and sacred rank.' (Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 144, vol. 1, pg. 528, Ansariyan Publications) These assertive and decisive statements make it abundantly clear that the rightful possessors of Imamat and Caliphate are the Ahle Bait (a.s.). No one else is deserving of this honor and station. Only the Ahle Bait (a.s.) can direct the people to the path of guidance and lead them to paradise. If somebody considers a person other than them as his leader, guide and Imam, he has deviated and is far from guidance. When Imam Ali (a.s.) appointed Janab Mohammad Ibne Abi Bakr as governor of Egypt, he (a.s.) wrote a letter to him in which he said: 'The leader towards guidance, and the leader towards destruction, the friend and the enemy of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), can never be alike.' (Nahjul Balagha, Letter No. 27, vol. 2, pg. 314, Ansariyan Publications) Imam Ali (a.s.) has tried to awaken the consciousness of man with this powerful statement. The statement appeals to the people to open their eyes and refer to their intellects and then decide with deep reflection - Are the leaders of guidance and the path bearers to paradise equal to the guides towards the hell fire and darkness? Never! Awaken and decide for yourselves. Chain of guidance It is crystal clear that Imamat is the exclusive right of the Ahle Bait (a.s.) and anyone who claims this right for himself/themselves is a liar and an oppressor. There is a well-known tradition from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) widely narrated by all scholars and traditionalists in their books. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) prophesied, 'This nation will have twelve leaders and guides and all of them will be from the Quraish. The one who leaves them will not harm them.' (i.e. the one who has distanced himself will be among the losers, because his death will be that of ignorance). (Musnad-e-Ahmad b. Hanbal, vol.5, pg. 312) The tradition of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) clearly highlights that there will only be twelve Imams till the Day of Judgment and all these leaders will be from the tribe of Quraish. Within the Quraish, the Imams will be from Bani Hashim. From the traditions mentioned above we conclude that after the demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) till the Day of Resurrection, this nation will have twelve Imams and all of them will be from Bani Hashim. Regarding the tradition from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) - 'I leave among you two weighty things (Saqalain), the Book of Allah and my progeny', Imam Ali (a.s.) was asked - Who is the progeny? He (a.s.) replied: I, Hasan (a.s.), Husain (a.s.) and the nine Imams (a.s.) from the progeny of Husain (a.s.), of whom the ninth one will be the Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) and the Qaem (a.t.f.s.). Neither will they separate from the Book of Allah nor will the Book of Allah separate from them, till they meet the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) at the Pool of Kausar.' (Kamaluddin, vol.1, pg. 240-241) Aamir bin Kasir asked Imam Ali (a.s.): O Ameerul Momineen (a.s.)! You have made us aware of the guides of disbelief and the caliphs of evil, now introduce to us the guides of truth and the real guides after you.' Imam Ali (a.s.) informed him, 'Yes, surely it is the promise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) to me that this religion will have twelve Imams and leaders, nine of whom will be from the progeny of Husain (a.s.). The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) has narrated, 'When I went to the heavens for Meraj, I saw written on the pillar of the Arsh 'There is no god except Allah, Mohammad (s.a.w.a.) is His Messenger, and I have aided him through Ali (a.s.) and I have helped him through Ali (a.s.)' And I saw twelve Lights. I asked: O My Lord! Whose lights are these? The reply was - These lights are of Imams from your progeny. Then I (Ali (a.s.)) asked: O Messenger of Allah, will you not tell me their names?' The Holy Prophet replied, 'Yes, certainly. You are Imam and Caliph after me, you will repay my debts and fulfill my promises. After you will be your two sons, Hasan (a.s.) and Husain (a.s.), and after Husain (a.s.) will be his son Ali - Zainul Abedeen (a.s.), after Ali (a.s.) will be his son Mohammad (a.s.) whose title is Baqir. After Mohammad (a.s.) will follow his son Jafar (a.s.) whose title is Sadiq. After Jafar (a.s.), will be his son Moosa (a.s.) whose title is Kazim. After Moosa (a.s.), will be his son Ali (a.s.) whose title is Reza. After Ali, his son Mohammad (a.s.) will succeed him and his title is Zaki. After Mohammad (a.s.) will follow his son Ali (a.s.) whose title is Naqi. After Ali (a.s.) will come his son Hasan (a.s.) whose title is Ameen and Askari. After him will be the son of Hasan (a.s.), Qaem (a.t.f.s.), whose name will be my name and who will bear maximum similarity with me. He will fill the earth with justice and equity as it would have been filled with oppression and injustice.' (Vol. 1, pg. 138, Imam Ali (a.s.) narrated about the condition of Imam Mahdi (a.s.)) There isn't just one tradition like this. We find several traditions on these lines and the number goes up to 20. For instance, Imam Ali (a.s.) recounts from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) who has categorically stated that from the time of his (s.a.w.a.) death till the Day of Qiyamat there will only be twelve Imams, and then each has been mentioned by his name. The entire arrangement was made so that people would know that Allah and His Prophet (s.a.w.a.) had already selected the Imams. It was not that anyone could be an Imam according to the wishes of the Islamic nation. It was not that an Imam who was supposed to follow his father in the chain of Imamat, died in his father's lifetime, leaving the chain of Imamat suspended until the people appointed the deceased's son as the Imam in his place. All the above traditions, were narrated when Janabe Ismail b. Jafar Sadiq was not even born. The list of Imams (a.s.) narrated by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and Imam Ali (a.s.) does not show Janabe Ismail's name. Therefore, if he was never destined to be an Imam then where does the question of usurping his Imamat arise? Another thing that is evident is that the twelve Imams (a.s.) enumerated in the prophetic tradition mentions the first Imam as Imam Ali (a.s.) and the twelfth and last Imam as Hazrat Wali-e-Asr (a.t.f.s.), who is the Imam of our time and is alive on this earth today and is amongst us but we are deprived of his meeting due to our sins and disobedience. Asbagh bin Nubata (r.a.) a very reliable companion of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) narrates, 'I presented myself before Hazrat Ali (a.s.). I saw that he was engrossed in some thought and marking with his blessed finger on the earth. I queried, 'O Ameerul Momineen (a.s.)! What is the matter, I find you today in some perplexity, making signs on the earth, do you love this earth? He (a.s.) replied: I swear by Allah that it is not so. I have never befriended this world, rather I was reflecting about that son, the eleventh one from my progeny. He is the Mahdi (a.t.f.s.), who will fill the earth with justice and equity as it was filled with injustice and tyranny. There is an occultation for him in which some people will be deviated while others will be guided. (Kamaluddin, vol.1, pg. 288-297, A'laamul Wara, pg. 400) How clearly Hazrat Ali (a.s.) has described and illuminated the chain of guidance and Imamat. Who could be more unfortunate and wretched that despite such a clear and illumined chain of guidance and Imamat, rejects it for those deviated guides who have usurped Hazrat Ali's (a.s.) right? Those who have harassed and persecuted Janabe Zahra (s.a.), burned down her door and waged war against her husband - the rightful Imam and celebrated on his martyrdom and were the main protagonists of the incident of Karbala. Their sons killed Imam Husain (a.s.) in Karbala, they made captives the Ahle Bait (a.s.) and martyred them one after the other. Their lives were devoid of Islamic teachings, they opposed the Quranic commands secretly and publicly, they were steeped in sins and prohibited acts and abandoned the religious obligations completely. They were prisoners of their carnal desires and neglected the hereafter and in this manner deprived themselves of guidance. Then how was it possible for them to guide others? Guidance has only one path and that path is the way of Hazrat Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.), finally terminating in Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) who is the Imam today. There is no other path leading to true guidance and there is no other guarantee for success and happiness in the world and the hereafter. We end this discussion with the declaration of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) inviting everyone to leave aside prejudices and rise above personal interests, to purify the intellect and consciousness, to decide about one's own end, lest the coming of the Angel of Death finds us perplexed and uncertain. Today there is time and tomorrow could be too late. Our decision will take us either to Paradise or to Hell. Let us not spoil our hereafter for this fleeting world. 'Observe this world, which you desire, towards which you move with desire and proximity, which sometimes angers you and at other times makes you happy. It is neither your actual abode nor the station for which you were created, nor is it the place towards which you are invited.' 'Take lesson, for it is not going to remain for you, nor are you in it forever. If it has beguiled you with its charm then it has also made you fearful with its wickedness. Do not be influenced by its scare and do not seek it greedily out of its fear.' 'Advance towards that abode towards which you have been invited and turn your hearts away from this world. None of you should lament like maids on deprivation of a thing of this world. Be patient on the obedience of Allah and wish for the completion of the bounties by safeguarding that which has been commanded by our Book to be safeguarded.' 'Pay heed, if you have safeguarded your religious beliefs then loss of anything of this world will not harm you. And if you have wasted and destroyed your religion then none of the worldly things, which you have safeguarded, can bring you any benefit.' (Nahjul Balagah, Sermon 173, vol. 1, pg. 644, Ansariyan Publications) May Allah turn our hearts towards truth and give us the blessing of patience!

The Attraction and Repulsion of Ali (a.s.)

What is the cause of Ali's love and affection in hearts of men? The secret of love has not till today been discovered by anyone. It is not possible to evolve a formula saying that had it happened so this would have been the result and had it happened the other way that would have been the result. However, it has a secret. There is something in the beloved, which attracts the lover and is bewitching for him. The love and attraction in the foregoing chapters has been named as "Ishq". Ali no doubt is the beloved of and coveted by men. Why? and to what end? Why this is exceptional with Ali that he inspires love and allures the souls to himself. Why has he become a perpetual phase and why does he live to eternity? Why do the hearts feel that they are acquainted with him? Why did people not feel that he is dead and it is why that they find him alive? Admittedly the object of love is not his body because he is not bodily present amongst us and we do not feel him as such. Moreover, love with Ali is not equivalent to hero-worship of all nations. It will be doubtful if we say love with Ali is sequel to love with his human and moral merits and that love with Ali is love with humanity. Doubtless, Ali is an embodiment of a perfect man. It is also correct that man loves great models of human virtue. But let Ali possess all these human merits, let him possess wisdom, knowledge, devotion, sacrifice, humility, decorum, kindness, affection, love for the weak, justice, freedom, independence, regard for humanity, selfless-ness, chivalry, bravery and kindness even towards his enemy; (and according to Maulvi: you are in chivalry, the Lion of Allah; We cannot define what you are in benevolence), generosity, benevolence, and all that Ali had let him have; if he would not have enjoyed the complexion of God, he would not have been so much captivating and inspiring as he is even today. Ali is loved because he has connection with Divinity. He, impercep­tibly, from the depths of our hearts attracts us towards the Truth and towards determination. And when we say Ali is one of the greatest signs of Allah, it is for the reason that we find in him the manifestation of Truth. Hence men's love for him. In fact what reinforces people's love with Ali is the bondage of love of God hidden in their souls. As the souls are eternal, so is love for Ali. There are so many brilliant points in Ali's personality, but what is always sublime and illuminating is his faith and sincerity, which has blessed him with Divine determination. Sauda Hamdani is a lady fond of Ali. She in presence of Mo'awiyah paid salutation to Ali and described his merits: "Blessed is the soul who has been hurried and with him justice has been buried. He was so committed to truth that no other heart could do. He was conjoined with faith and belief. Saasaa-b-Sohan Abdi is another devotee of Ali. He is from amongst those who joined Ali's funeral on the fateful night. When they burried Ali and heaped dust on his body, Saasaa put one of his hands on his heart and threw dust on his head with the other, saying, "Death be happy to you! You were born in pious premises. Your perseverance was vigorous, your efforts were marvelous. You had control on your thoughts and your bargain was profitable". "You have reverted back to your Creator and He has happily welcome you. His angels have rallied around you. You have resided in the proximity of the Prophet. Allah has brought you closer to Himself and has put you in the vicinity of your brother Mustafa. He has made you drink from his cup". "I wish Allah may grace us to follow you and trace your footsteps. We should keep your fiends to be our friends and your enemies to be our enemies and may be we are resurrected among the company of thy friends". "You discovered what others could not. You reached where others could not. In the view of thy brother, the Prophet, you have battled. With Allah's Faith you stood fast in a befitting manner upto enforcement of Sunnah, eradication of opposition to it and establishment of Faith. Best salutations to you. "Through you the Muslims were fortified, their ways became clear and Divine commands were enforced. No single person would ever possess all those merits and charms which you singly possessed. You were responsive to the Prophet's call. You were foremost among others to receive Prophet's approval. You hastened to his assistance. You defended him at the risk of your life. In the moments of dread and horror you assaulted with your sword, The Zulfiqar, and broke the aggressor's spinal cord. You uprooted idolatry and meanness. You dragged the transgressor through sand and blood. May you rest in peace, O the leader of the faithful!" "You were nearest to the Prophet. You were the first to embrace Islam. You were full of confidence. You were of the firm mind. You were rich in virtue. May God not deprive us of our reward for our missing you. May He not abandon us after you". "By God! Thy life was key to virtue and lock to vice. Thy death is key to every vice and lock to every virtue. Had the people benefited from you, blessings would have showered on them from heavens. But they preferred the sordid world". Yes they preferred the sordid world. They could not face justice and Ali's determination. Ultimately rigidity and stagnation came out of the sleeves of such a people and they martyred Ali Ali is matchless in having such friends and selfless devotees who laid down their lives in the cause of his love and affiliation. They marched even to the gallows. The pages of Islamic history are proud of their blossoming, beautiful and marvelous biographies. Hands of the ignoble criminals like Ziyad, son of unknown, his son Obaidullah, Hajjaj bin Yusuf, Mutawakkil and, above all, Mo'awiyah bin Abi Sufian are soaked to elbow of the blood of such a cream of humanity. Allahummal'an qatalata Amir al-Mo'minen(as)
